I think the principle of revalidation is probably accepted by the profession at large. The present medical list held by the GMC simply gives personal details and dates of qualification. It gives no indication of fitness to practice. The basis of revalidation is to provide a system which ensures that anyone registered with the GMC is fit to practice. 95% of doctors will have no problem with revalidation and the system which is emerging will be fair and open. The question of resources is clearly important. We have no indication of the costs involved and who will meet them. Protected time for the elements required such as audit is obviously necessary. The question of annual appraisal has been superimposed on the revalidation debate by the Chief Medical Officer in his paper "Supporting Doctors; Protecting Patients". This was a knee jerk reaction to recent events and interestingly similar plans have not been put forward in Wales or Scotland. Annual appraisal will give health authorities the same power over supposedly independent contractors as they already have over employees. Again most of us will have nothing to fear but it is vital to ensure that the process is not too burocratic and is not influenced by gossip, tittle tattle or personal emnities.
